What
exactly does "Serviceable" mean?
This is FAA terminology inferring that the equipment have been repaired
and tested according to the manufacturer's specifications. It is in proper
working order and legal for installation and use.
What is factory FOH (factory overhauled) equipment?
Manufacturers often have many units in surplus to their needs. These
surplus items become available because of over-production and/or returns
under warranty. Since these returned items can no longer be sold as “new,” dealers
are often afforded the opportunity to purchase them for resale. Although
manufacturers usually repair units to “like new” condition, many
units are, in fact, new and were merely overstock inventory.
What is the difference between a Yellow Tag and an 8130-3 Serviceable
tag?
These certification tags mean the same thing. However, while the Yellow
Tag is recognized in North America, the 8130-3 Serviceable Tag is accepted
worldwide. At Cat 1, we always issue a 8130-3 Serviceable Tag with our
equipment.
Why should I choose used avionics over new merchandise?
Everyone would love to fly with the latest and greatest avionics available,
but that’s not always practical. Although there are many reasons
why, the root answer is money. First and foremost, used avionics tend to
cost less than factory new items. By purchasing used equipment you’ve
effectually allowed the original owner to pay for the depreciation. You
are still gaining the potential increases in capability and safety, while
saving money compared to buying a new product.
Compatibility issues are another factor. Some of the newest technology
available may require and extensive restructuring of your aircraft panel,
costing the buyer much more than just the price of the unit. Therefore,
when replacing an obsolete or damaged unit with a quality used one, little
or no alterations may be required. This will address both the issues of
software compatibility and potential differences in hardware dimensions.
Although used avionics may not always be the answer, they do tend to save
the buyer both time and money on installation and acquisition.
On a final note, used avionics purchased from reputable companies are
also very reliable, having been tested and tagged before their resale.
A company like Cat 1 Avionics stands behind these statements with solid
warranties.
I can’t find what I’m looking for here. Can you help
me?
Yes, we probably can. Our inventory is changing continually, so if it
doesn’t appear here, that doesn’t mean it’s not available
to us. Items are bought and sold so frequently that it’s virtually
impossible to update our online inventory fast enough. However, our access
to the equipment you need is ever present. If you don’t see it listed
just contact us and we’ll take care of it.
Will Cat 1 purchase my used equipment?
We purchase clients’ equipment daily. Please contact us for a quote.
Whether you need to sell an item outright or would like to offset the cost
of an upgrade, we can usually work out a fair arrangement. Bear in mind
that some units are both obsolete and no longer supported or have been
damaged beyond repair. Unfortunately, we do not purchase these items.
What is Cat 1 Avionics’ return policy?
All items with the exception of special order items may be returned within
30 days for a full refund as long as the items have not been used and are
unopened in the original packaging. Items that have been installed and
are shown to be defective may be returned within 90 days of purchase. At
which time, we will repair or replace that item at our discretion.
What is Cat 1 Avionics’ warranty policy?
Warranties go into effect on the date of installation and break down as
follows:
| Avionics: |
Instruments: |
- SV (6 months)
- OH (1 year)
- NS or FN (2 years)
- AR (none)

What is "exchange" pricing?
"Exchange" is used to indicate the replacement or “exchange” of
a defective unit with a non-defective or serviceable unit. By sending in a “core” for
exchange, the buyer generally offsets their expenditure by providing the seller
with a repairable unit to replenish their own inventory. Therefore, all parties
benefit. However, cores that are heavily damaged, modified, or obsolete (meaning
that they are too old for manufacturer support) are not usually accepted for
exchange.
Is there a difference in “exchange” and “trade-in” values?
Yes. Trade-in values for equipment are based on individual circumstances.
Trade-in values may vary greatly depending on the type of equipment being
traded
Why do some avionics with the same model number vary so much in price?
Most avionics units have both a part number and model number. Some of
those models will have several part numbers, which represent the various
technical and functional options available within that model. For example,
the KI-208 and KI-209 indicators contain an internal VOR/LOC converter.
These units do not allow for direct GPS connection. However, the KI-208A
and KI-209A include a relay, which allows them to bypass the converter
for GPS deviation indication. Therefore, units that contain all the features
and capabilities within a particular model, usually command a higher value.
